While Watching Jaws

James’ Blog Origins: Explained

I’m sure you’re asking yourself, why did you go to all the trouble to create a Facebook-like blog when Facebook is just right over there.  In fact, haven’t I even seen you on Facebook?

Yes you probably have seen me on Facebook.  I created a couple profiles recently only to kill them in short order.

Simply, I don’t trust Facebook.  Privacy issues, ads, data manipulation, etc.  When I’m on Facebook I feel like I’m on the toilet with a guard watching me.

My pictures are mine.  My thoughts are mine.  No one owns me and I want to keep it that way.

RIP Robin Williams

936full-awakenings-screenshotRobin Williams was one of those actors you expected to always be around.  His comedy was unlike any other: manic, intelligent, unexpected, and rapid-fire.  You could feel the man’s yearnings in interviews and in the characters he played.  None touched me more than the movie Awakenings, with Robert DeNiro.  Much like Williams himself, you could feel his reservations, his social awkwardness, and finally his desire to connect and reconnect with the people in his life.  It’s sad he’s gone but we’re so much better for having known him.  Robin, I hope you find your peace, and wherever you are, you are making your audience laugh.

Orange is the New Black: Marathon Completed

Orange Is The New Black Poster WallpaperJust finished both seasons of Orange is the New Black.  What can I say?  It’s compelling in a way that not even Breaking Bad was.  The first season is definitely the best.  Chapman seems to have little to do in season 2 and I felt Taystee’s character took a major step backward.  Laura Prepon (Alex) is good and her absence is definitely felt in the second season, but she’s a little like Kirsten Dunst in the Spider-man trilogy: fine I guess but you wish they would have tried harder in casting this role as she comes off kind of obvious and without much depth.  I found myself enjoying my time exploring the back-stories of the other characters, and I particularly like how the show never condescends with story recaps or unrealistic character development.  There are story arcs, and you need to pay attention unless you want to get left behind.  Because of the extreme adult nature of the show, I can’t say I’d recommend it to just anyone.  The show is raw and can be downright uncomfortable to watch at times, but it can also be touching and funny as well.  It’s worth finding out if this is a show for you.

Doctor Who Into Darkness

Definitely excited to see Capaldi as the Doctor but I’m nowhere near as excited as I was to see Matt’s first outing.  I’m sure PC will be brilliant.

Guardians of the Galaxy

See it.  I haven’t had this much fun at a movie in a long time.  I am Groot!
